Biography

Chilean activist, folk singer and songwriter, poet, and theatre director.  Víctor Jara was one of the leaders of the "Nueva Canción Chilena" (New Chilean Song). A strong supporter of the democratically elected socialist Popular Unity government, Víctor was arrested during the 1973 CIA sponsored military coup d'état. Imprisoned alongside thousands of Chileans at Estadio Chile, Victor Jara was murdered by the agents of the military coup.  Víctor's music recordings were destroyed and then outlawed by the military. The music and message of Víctor Jara lives on today and continues to inspire people from all over the world.
