Biography

Mohammad Mossadegh
May 19, 1882 – 5 March 1967
Prime Minister of Iran, Author, Anti-Imperialist

Mohammad Mossadegh was the Prime Minister of Iran from 1951 to 1953. Mossadegh fervently fought for economic and political independence from imperial interests throughout his political career. Mossadegh's opposition to puppet governments and foreign domination resulted in his being jailed several times and exiled. In 1951 he nationalized the Iranian oil industry which was met with economic and political aggression from Britain and the U.S. One of the many leaders who fought for true self determination, Mossadegh would receive a similar fate after he was overthrown in a military coup d’etat that was funded by British and U.S. governments. Tried by a military tribunal for high treason, Mossadegh received a sentence of 3 years in solitary confinement at a military jail and was exiled to his village where he lived the rest of his years under house arrest.
