Biography

Salvador Allende helped establish the Chilean Socialist Party and was active in Chilean politics for over forty years pushing for social change and defending the rights of the marginalized. Allende became the first democratically elected Marxist president of Chile in November 1970 and the Popular Unity government took many steps to redistribute wealth in Chile, including the nationalization of industries and banks. Allende and the Popular Unity government faced covert action and sabotage from the beginning until his death during the CIA sponsored military coup d'état of September 11, 1973.
